What we have, then, is a full elaboration of St. Paul’s words: ‘Where sin abounds, there does grace more abound’ (Rom 5:20). The liberation theme of Medellin is salvation itself, but with a difference. The salvation-redemption achieved by and in Christ is seen in a context more truly universal than we are often accustomed to realize. What is ‘new’ in the documents of the Latin American Conference is not the doctrine itself, but rather the amplitude, the proportions that our traditional doctrine on redemption assumes…. The Savior’s redemptive mission is directed to the spirit, but to the incarnated spirit, to the spirit inextricably united to matter, flesh, society, and institutions. - James T. O’Connor1
